At Our Lady’s & St Mochua’s we have been running our ROE Programme since 2011. \u00a0Each year we are presented with a different baby (and mum) who in his\/her own way helps to develop Empathy in our children.<\/h4>\n

The roots of empathy mission is to build caring, peaceful and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults. \u00a0The children of today are the parents and citizens of tomorrow.<\/h4>\n

Roots of Empathy develops an understanding of diversity, respect, anti bullying and a focus on inclusion for everyone. \u00a0If we are able to foster these qualities in our children, we are certainly producing successful leaders for the future.<\/h4>\n

In our first year of the programme 2011-2012 it was amazing to watch the changes in the children. \u00a0They became kinder, more understanding and more aware of their own feelings and temperaments. \u00a0They really looked forward to the visits of their teacher (baby). \u00a0Since 2011 the children’s desire, enthusiasm and energy for participation in the programme has spiralled and is viewed as a key experience of their lives at primary school.<\/h4>\n

Roots of Empathy – 5 Year Celebration<\/h1>\n

Our first Roots of Empathy Baby was Lucia Murray 2011-12.<\/h2>\n

Lucia was our first Roots of Empathy Baby when our programme began in 2011-12. \u00a0She visited the children once every month with her mum, Noella. \u00a0During this time the children watched Lucia grow and discussed in detail her movements, sounds, interactions, and temperament. \u00a0This allowed the children to reflect on their own development and at the same time develop the skill of empathy. \u00a0Lucia is now in Primary 5 and is a much loved member of our school community.<\/h4>\n

Our second Roots of Empathy Baby was Antoin Farrell 12-13.<\/h2>\n

Antoin was our second Roots of Empathy Baby in the 2012-13 School Year. \u00a0Antoin visited each month with his Mum Bronagh. \u00a0This was a special year as Antoin’s sister Aideen was in the class. \u00a0Aideen really enjoyed having her baby brother coming to visit. \u00a0Antoin is now in P5 and is in the same class as Lucia, our first Roots of Empathy Baby. \u00a0Antoin enjoys playing all sport with his favourite being Gaelic Football.<\/h4>\n

Our third Roots of Empathy Baby was Cara Conlon 2013-14.<\/h2>\n

Cara was our third Roots of Empathy Baby. \u00a0She became a special member of her class and the children loved welcoming her each month. \u00a0She and her Mum Claire loved visiting our school. \u00a0Cara’s cousins Sean Og, Lucy, Kate and Emma attended our school and loved when Cara came to visit.<\/h4>\n

Our fourth Roots of Empathy Baby was Sophia Hughes 2014-15.<\/h2>\n

Sophia was our fourth Roots of Empathy Baby. \u00a0Sophia and her mum Melissa became important members of Mrs McClelland’s Primary 4 Class during 2014-2015 School Year. \u00a0Every month they watched Sophia grow and develop while reflecting on their own feelings and relationships. \u00a0Sophia is now in Primary 3. \u00a0She enjoys playing with her friends and Camogie. \u00a0She has two sisters called Mia and Enya.<\/h4>\n

Our fifth Roots of Empathy Baby was Sarah Christy 2015-16.<\/h2>\n

Our fifth Roots of Empathy Baby was Sarah Christy. \u00a0Sarah visited her class every month with her Mum Elaine. \u00a0This was a special year as Sarah’s brother Michael was a pupil in the class. \u00a0He thoroughly enjoyed having his Mum and baby sister visit every month. \u00a0Sarah, is now in P2 and her big brother Michael is now in second year at St Patrick’s High School. \u00a0However, she still has two brothers, Daniel and Jack, in Primary School. \u00a0Sarah likes to play with her friends and help her Dad walk the dogs.<\/h4>\n

Our sixth Roots of Empathy Baby was Lorcan Anscombe 2016-17.<\/h2>\n

Lorcan was our sixth Roots of Empath Baby. \u00a0Lorcan was also a very special baby as his dad Nathan was in our first Primary 7 Class when our school opened in 2003. \u00a0Lorcan attended every month with his mum Jennifer. \u00a0The children loved watching him grow and develop over the year. \u00a0Lorcan is now in Primary 1 and loves playing with his friends and in the construction corner during structured play. \u00a0His big brother Oisin is in Primary 5.<\/h4>\n

Our seventh Roots of Empathy Baby was Aoibhinn Hourican 2017-18.<\/h2>\n

Aoibhinn was our seventh Roots of Empath Baby. \u00a0Aoibhinn is the youngest in her family and has one sister Caoimhe and three brothers, Philip, Patrick and Michael. \u00a0Aoibhinn visited our school every week with her mum Tracy. \u00a0Aoibhinn taught all the boys and girls the meaning of empathy and allowed them to develop their skills of building better relationships and solving problems. \u00a0Aoibhinn is starting Primary 1 in September 2021 and we are looking forward to welcoming her back to our school.<\/h4>\n

Odhran was our eighth Roots of Empath Baby.\u00a0 \u00a0Odhran visited our school every week with his Mum Jenny. Odhran taught all the boys and girls the meaning of empathy and allowed them to develop their skills of building better relationships and solving problems. \u00a0Odhran is starting Primary 1 in September 2024 and we are looking forward to welcoming him back to our school.<\/h4>\n

Charlie taught all the boys and girls the meaning of empathy and allowed them to develop their skills of building better relationships and solving problems. \u00a0Charlie’s mum is a past pupil.<\/h4>\n

In June 2024 we celebrated 10 Years of Roots of Empathy.<\/h4>\n

We enjoyed a wonderful celebration yesterday marking 10 Years of Roots of Empathy in our school. We were delighted to have all our Roots of Empathy teachers invited back to mark this momentous occasion. Many thanks to Lucia, Antoin, Cara, Sophia, Sarah, Lorcan, Aoibhinn, Odhran, Charlie and Connie for making the day so special for us all. Special thanks to Ms Mary Gallagher who has been delivering Roots of Empathy in our school during these 10 years. Mary\u2019s dedication, professionalism and commitment has ensured that this programme allows our children to acquire many life skills and attributes. Many thanks to all involved, all our guests and of course to Mary.<\/h4>\n
